Interesting Shooting Results
Friday, 13 April 2012 14:19

So I went to a local defensive pistol competition this past weekend.

How'd I do?

3rd in my division (marksman) and 6th overall.

Not bad considering it has been well over a year since I have competed, or shot for that matter.
In the shooting world, we like to say that marksmanship is a perishable skill.

Use it or loose it.

In Z-Health we say the same thing. Its all based on the SAID principle. Which in a nutshell says that you get better at what you do.

So if sitting hunched over a keyboard or on the couch is your skill, your body will get very good at that.

"Awesome!" you say, Olympic level couch-potatoing here I come!

Well here's the bad news. You will become so good at this posture that when your 80, guess what you're gonna look like?

Yea... Thats right...A freakin' gargoyle.

Pretty sure that's not what you want.

The other interesting thing I noticed this weekend was my front sight.

This is a big deal in shooting. In general you place the front sight where you want the bullet to go.

Now this isn't hard to do...Unless of course the timer goes off behind you...and you are with a group of very competent shooters...trying to hit a target while running for cover....and its your 11th shot after reloading the mag...

Did I mention you were running for cover...and that you're being timed? And that there are some cute girls who present who are out shooting you?

Yea. No pressure.

Now in the past I would end up losing the front sight after a few shots and end up shooting pretty crappy. Not so this time.

So, what changed?

Well, for starters, before and after my round, I was doing dynamic joint mobility drills (Quick Start DVD or the R-Phase DVD) to pull me out of threat. At home/gym/work I have been doing vision drills that I learned at the Essentials of Elite Performance cert.

Headin' to the range tomorrow for some more rudimentary drills (grip training, draw and fire, etc)

I'm hoping to score much better at my next comp...will letcha know how it goes...

'light' day
Sunday, 29 April 2012 14:37

Today was a scheduled "light" day.
On deck:
some rehab work for my knee, some finger work. Specifically my trigger finger. :)

The primary goal is threat inoculation. Using some DJM that I picked up at I-Phase
I prepped my knee from some squatting movements. Utilizing a TRX as a mental 'crutch' of sorts, I went into a deep squat and held it right at the hairy edge of where my knee was bothering me. The goal is retrain my nervous system that this old 'injury' has long since healed and that it is ok to assume this movement pattern.

Speaking of which this is a good time for a refresher on your nervous system.

Ya see, on a deep level your brain remembers past traumas. In this case, an old barbell lunge injury lingers deep in my mind. Anytime my overall threat is heightened, I tend to 'feel' it in my knee first.

Dont forget, pain is all in your head! (merely a signal that is perceived by the brain.)

Next up, some 'light' trigger work using my new NLT laser pistol. Weighted to feel exactly like a G17 (even has a removable, weighted mag), this bad boy houses two lasers instead of bullets.

The bottom laser activates when you approach the break point of the sear. (I have this one pointing way low, so as to not distract me from my front sight). The upper laser (aligned to my front sight) illuminates upon 'shooting'.

Its a nifty way to gauge your trigger pull and overall grip/handling. If you see dashes instead of pinpoints, you're jerking the trigger. Slooow down. Breathe. Relax.

The trainer also helps you to not pin the trigger (pull it back and hold it) and to only release the trigger far enough for the sear to reengage. In other words, to make ya shoot faster
